The
beautiful city of Aguascalientes is a
magical place that even with its, almost
five-hundred thousand inhabitants, can
have the pleasure of enjoying of a
friendly and familiar ambience to the
very style of the big "ranchos". In this
city the vial system makes an impression
on the foreign visitors since the people
have no need of traffic lights, they use
a system called "one and one",
consisting in the drivers passing on one
street and yielding in the next one.
This city has a life with true quality;
here you can breathe history and culture
in every corner. Its historic center
catches the eye thanks to the
distinctive green and yellow colors of
the quarry from this region which can be
appreciated on the façades of the
gorgeous buildings.
While
strolling along the beautiful streets of
the city, you will find a huge range of
historic buildings, gorgeous temples
dating back to past centuries, and a
great variety of museums with priceless
art expositions. In the surrounding
areas of the city you will find the very
famous natural springs with curative
properties, and of course the beautiful
haciendas of great historic value.
Without a doubt, Aguascalientes has many
things to offer to the visitor.

Palacio
de Gobierno (City Hall)
This beautiful
building dates from 1665 and is located
at the southern side of the main plaza.
Even though it was used as a city
council it is known that it was
originally intended to be used as the
residence of the Rincon family, nobles
who were the holders of the Cienega de
Mata heritage. This building has a great
historic value, it features a beautiful
façade of red volcanic stone and it has
more than a hundred arcs that surround
both of the patios of this colonial
building. At the back, the murals made
by Oswaldo Barra tell stories about the
local and national history.

La Feria Nacional de San Marcos (San
Marcos' National Fair)
San
Marcos' National Fair has become the
most distinctive element to identify the
state of Aguascalientes, nationally and
internationally. Held from April to May,
it is the oldest and most famous fair of
the country, it has popular festivals,
cockfights that take place at the
largest "palenque" (cockfight ring) of
Latin America; this place also features
an elegant casino, the only place in
Mexico where bets are allowed. When the
cockfights are over, many national and
international singers present their
shows on this arena.
At the San Marcos' National Fair you
will also find bullfights, Ferris wheel
and other fair's rides, theater shows,
the election of the Queen of the fair,
the famous contest of traditional
costume, interesting farming, cattle and
industrial expositions; the National
Young-Art Award, the National Poetry
Award and many other first-class awards,
achieving a wide cultural program that
goes hand and hand with the endless fun
provided to locals and visitors by the
fair. |

El
Jardin de San Marcos (San Marcos'
Garden)
The
construction of this beautiful place was
finished in 1842, it is delimitated by a
neoclassic balustrade (a banister of
small columns) of pink quarry, this
garden has access on the four cardinal
points, and finishing touches with a
vase style. Nowadays, this place is a
symbol of the city. The temple of San
Marcos beautifully rises on the west
side of this garden is dedicated to
Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion (Our Lady
of the Ascension) and it is located over
the same place where a chapel was
originally founded in 1575; on its
façade, decorations of the Salomonic
Baroque style can be found.

Encino Temple
This place was built
between 1773 and 1796. The Black Christ
is venerated in this temple. This image
first appeared when a lightening
collided against a tree; the
commemoration of the Black Christ is on
November, 13th. It is believed that
bullfighters are the most devoted
advocates to this black and beautiful
figure. A collection of painting about
the Via Cruxis made by the artist Andres
Lopez between 1798 and 1801 is exposed
in the walls of this temple. The Encino
Temple is located in one of the oldest
neighborhoods of the city, known as
Triana. |

Ojocaliente
The
springs of Ojocaliente have been the
main source of water for the city of
Aguascalientes since its foundation,
thanks to the natural pools formed by
the gushes of water. Its thermal baths
where open to the public during the
second half of the 19th century, they
have kept their neoclassic style of
French influence that date back to the
early days of the 20th century.

"Descubre" Science and
Technology Museum
Right outside the city you will find a
fabulous spiral-shaped building, the
"Descubre" Science and Technology
Museum, a pretty modern interactive
museum where you can approach science
and technology in a fun way, discovering
the mysteries of our planet and the
universe; you will also get a very
different global perspective of our
planet's environment. This museum is a
place where learning will turn into an
exciting adventure. |

Culture
House
The Culture House is located in a 17th
century building that was first used as
a family house, and then turned into a
convent. Among its valuable expositions
you will find six bronze plaques with
motifs of ancient Aztec gods and kings.
The patios of this building are used for
book fairs, theater plays, and book
expositions or presentations. If you
enjoy art in any form, this is a place
worth visiting. |

Regional
Museum of History
The Regional Museum of History will
allow you to take an exciting journey
through the evolution of Aguascalientes,
from prehistory to the present day. In
its 9 exposition halls you will find
regional paleontology exhibitions,
diverse ceramic, archaeological and
colonial pieces, and some pieces dating
from the Revolutionary Convention of
1914. Inaugurated in 1988 by the state
government and the INAH (National
Institute of Anthropology and History),
it is a must see place during your visit
to this beautiful city.

Contemporary Art Museum
At the Contemporary Art Museum of
Aguascalientes you will find a marvelous
collection of the most representative
plastic art of Mexico. Besides, it
features wide spaces for temporal

Ex Hacienda
Los Cuartos
By the
end of the 17th century, this hacienda
was used for stockbreeding, towards the
19th century this activity was
substituted little by little by
agriculture, mainly farming and wheat
grinding, activities in which it became
very productive. In 1990 this property
was donated to the Miguel Angel
Barberena Foundation which is devoted to
environmental education. The facilities
of this ex hacienda are wonderful, that
is why children camps are organized in
here, to teach them how to protect
nature. |

Former
Legislative Palace
This
property, conceived first as lodgings, was built
between 1912 and 1914 by J Refugio Reyes and was
during a long time the elegant Hotel Paris. In
1982, it became the siege of the legislative
power of the state.
The façade,
in three levels of rose quarry stone, is
neoclassical style. The main access, nest
shaped, has two levels. In the second one, there
are balconies and windows ajimez type, and in
the third balconies with rectangular windows and
padded adornments. The inside is neoclassical
style, with Doric columns and a balustrade
staircase. |

Bullrings
Constructed in 1947, with a capacity for about
9000 spectators. In the following years
theirfacilities were notably improved, Joining
the set of the Expoplaza in 1992. Nowadays
it has a capacity for 15000 people and the best
exponents of the bullfighting art have been here
. To the north of there is statue of Armillita,
The most famous bullfighter of Aguascalientes.
Their architecture and ornamentation consist of
symbolic religious elements and its own motives
of the bullfights. The chapel was remodeled,
space full of meaning where one can find an
image of the black Christ of the Encino,
Employer of the local bullfighters.
San Marcos Plaza.
This plaza was constructed in a record time of
48 days. It was inaugurated on April 24 in 1896,
with a cartel of luxury and an impressive full.
Since then the fair of San Marcos is combined
with the bullfighting spectacle, since 1988. Due
to its limited space, bullfighting events are
celebrated in Monumental Plaza, and during the
fair of San Marcos it works as “Teatro del
Pueblo” (Free fee theater for all the people). |

Cultural
Center "Los Arquitos"
The Baths
of Los Arquitos first was built for the pleasure
of the inhabitants, since the ones of the
Ojocaliente had from their beginning medicinal
properties. It was also known them like the Down
Baths, to differentiate them from the Great
Baths from Ojocaliente to which the families of
great economic resources went traditionally,
turning these visits strolls; whereas the humble
ones took advantage of the drains to sky opened
like baths. Its construction was approved by the
city council the 4 of May of 1821; for such
effect the tank of the springs with the
integrated water box was constructed to an
underground aqueduct of 1348 meters in length,
uniting to the baths, spurting to the 13
pleasures or bathtubs, the four baths outdoors,
the Orchard, the set of public laundries and by
the end of century XIX to the well-known pool
like the Puga. The set is conformed by
constructions of different times, between which
it emphasizes the old San Carlos Hotel, of
neoclassic style, its outdoor pools and their
neogothic arcade; the front of the same style
was the main entrance. In 1989 it was
established in cultural matter the importance of
the rescue and conservation of the
archaeological, historical and artistic
patrimony of the country, and consequently, the
architectonic set called Bath of Los Arquitos,
was declared historical monument. At the
beginning of 1993, with the purpose of turning
it a new Cultural Center that facilitated the
educative access to the culture and services to
the population, the works of architectonic
rescue, the project of restoration and
adaptation of the building began. It corresponds
to the Cultural Institute of Aguascalientes (ICA)
to give promotion and diffusion to the cultural
activities in general, and individual to
artistic education in the Cultural Center Los
Arquitos, which opened its doors to the public
in November of 1994.

Municipal Palace
It is
located in the south part of Plaza Patria, next
to the government palace. It was built in 1700
and a façade neoclassical style with two levels.
On the first level, the central pillars present
semi-detached columns, with ionic capital. On
the second level, is a continuous balcony with
rectangular windows. To the sides there are
doors and windows with frames of quarry stone;
the windows with balconies and the doors with
curved pediment. On the top of the façade is
broken pediment, below which it is written "Palacio
Municipal", and above a high relief of an eagle
devouring a snake. On the back side of the
building is another high relief with the coat of
arms of Aguascalientes. In the first patio is a
fountain of quarry stone with a circular parapet
and a double stairway to get access to the
second floor. |

El Cedazo Park
The
Cedazo is a physical area that offers the
alternative to enjoy the country space and to
learn about nature, plants, birds and the water
process in a direct form. The main attraction of
the park it is a small reservoir that has 3
small constructed islands, with the purpose to
stand out, the beauty that migrating birds bring
to a comfortable area.
In
Cedazo the fine arts are promoted especially to
children through out cultural workshops like:
painting and drawing, piano lessons, acoustic
guitar lessons, jazz, classical dance, plastic
arts, sulfeggio, folkloric dance and modern
dance. It also counts with sports areas and
extensive green areas.
Rodolfo Landeros Gallegos Ecological Park
Located
in the south of the city, over the José Ma.
Chávez boulevard. It counts with many
attractions such as, motorized train that gives
a scenic ride; the most comfortable and
practical way to get to know the gigantic park.
Another way to know the park is by renting a
four wheel ecological vehicle, and ride through
the road.
The park
counts with sports installations, outdoors
theater, a Plaza, bar, handicrafts shop, botanic
garden, a Fauna museum and mechanical rides,
that give a perfect frame for family time.
Miguel Hidalgo Park
Located
between Adolfo López Máteos Av. And Poder
Legislativo. The entrance to the park is in this
last street. The park is over five and a half
hectares, and it was open to public in the year
of 1964.
It is a
green zone that counts with ash tress, poplars,
laurels, eucalyptus and other trees and ornament
plants. It also counts with a peculiar
artificial lake, children play ground, and a
scenic train, that bring Aguascalientes's
families together every Sunday.
Mexico Park
It is
one of the biggest parks in Aguascalientes and
it is divided in two sections: natural areas and
recreational areas.
The
natural areas count with two grass soccer
fields, tennis, basket ball and volley ball
courts, a peculiar artificial lake a motto cross
and bike cross field and two summer houses.
The
recreational area counts with a lake and a dock.
The access to the park is in a terrace that
gives the function of a look out point, and it
also counts with an outdoors gym.
